 Altarskåpet från Lofta kyrka i Småland - numera i Statens historiska museum - skildrar Jungfru Marie historia. Det är tillverkat i Antwerpen - stadens stämpel, en hand, finns instämplad på flera ställen - och har tillskrivits Antwerpenmästaren Jan de Molder, ur vars verkstad skåpet kan ha utgått omkring 1510. Under mittpartiet, där Marie död, himmelsfärd och kröning skildras, ses motivet för frimärket - den sovande Isai (också Jesse eller Jessai) med roten till Jesu stamträd i sitt knä; därifrån växer det upp två stammar med Jesu förfäder mellan slingorna. Scenen bygger på bibelns ord i profeten Jesajas bok: "Men ett skott skall skjuta upp ur Isai avhuggna stam och en telning i dess rötter skall bära frukt ... "Vi finner motivet också i julpsalmen Sv ps 51: "Det är en ros utsprungen, av Jesse rot och stam..." |
 The altarpiece from the Lofta church in the province of Smaland – now kept in the National Swedish Historical Museum - depicts the Life of Virgin Mary. The altarpiece is stamped in several places with the Antwerp hand, and it came from the workshop of the Antwerp master Jan de Molder around 1510. The Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin is depicted in the bottom level of the centre panel, as is the stamp motif: Jesse reposing at the root of the geneological tree of Jesus. Two stems come forth from the root, and the forefathers of Jesus are portrayed in among the branches. The scene is from the Prophet Isaiah (11:1) “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” |
